Sat, 17 November 2007 Reported rumours of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' dictatorial tendencies seem to be grossly exaggerated, according to Stuart Munkton from the Latin American desk of GreenLeft weekly. International mainstream media coverage of right wing student protests (designed to sabotage the latest plebiscite for constitutional reform) got both the facts and the figures wrong. Stuart explains, quite simply what the reforms are, why a huge majority of the Venezuelan people will vote in favor of them, and why the US State department and the establishment media are in an hysterical feeding frenzy over the possibilities of popularly ratified change. Sat, 17 November 2007 Lisa Macdonald of the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network talks with 2NimFM about ways in which Australians can overcome the media spin and distortions about Venezuela's move towards socialism. The AVSN has reliable people on the ground providing regular eyewitness reports that contradict the hysterical accounts of the mainstream international media, and is organising a stream of brigades and study tours for Australians to go there and see for themselves. Fri, 2 November 2007 28 Mb. 128kbps mono 30 mins.Rob Wesley-Smith has just come back from one of his many visits to Timor Leste. He is familiar with the area (Same) and the people where Australian troops tried to capture the rebel mutineer, Alfredo Reynado. Wes knows Reynado personally, being one of the few people to meet him when Reynado first came to Australia as a refugee. While not impressed with Reynado's role in recent events, Wes is very critical of the 'modus operandi' of the Australian Defense Forces in Timor Leste. Wes has been active in defense of the independence of the East Timorese people since the first days of the Indonesian intervention. His involvement goes back to dodging police and ASIO agents to set up and maintain the clandestine radio transmitter, which was the only means the Fretilin/Falintil guerillas had of communicating with the outside world, after Indonesia sealed East Timor off. Wes was also involved in several attempts to smuggle medical supplies to the Fretilin guerillas in 1976. In this interview he recalls half a lifetime of activism for Timor Leste. Sat, 29 September 2007 Jennifer Drysdale at the Centre for Environmental Studies at the Australian National University spent 2 years in Timor Leste researching the governance of East Timor's hard won petroleum resources. Now, with the new Timorese Parliament taking control of the Petroleum Fund she talks with Nimbin Community Radio 2NimFm about the past and future prospects for East Timor's budding economy. The lineup of political parties that kept Fretilin out of government campaigned strongly on accusations that Fretilin was 'holding out' on the petroleum fund. Yet, the new parliament shows no signs of changing the Fretilin policy. Jennifer's PhD. research turns Australian media preconceptions on its head, indicating that the Fretilin policy was, in fact, what the people really wanted, and that Fretilin was actually responding to the popular will. In that time she saw sub-commandante Marcos in action, met other Zapatista leaders, and was active in fending off violent attempts by landowners to force Zapatista communities off their land and out of their homes. This was done using Zapatista tactics of non-violence. She observed the Zapatista movement supporting the 'other government' - an alternative movement aiming for a government in Mexico based on grass roots democracy and indigenous traditions - which is establishing itself all over Mexico. In the state of Oaxaca the 'Other Government' now ignores the State governor and runs much of the state from grass-roots community organisations. Mon, 20 August 2007 Stuart Monkton of the Greenleft Weekly comments on the sweeping reforms proposed for Venezuela's social system, announced last week by President Hugo Chavez. While the reforms will establish Venezuela as one of the most visionary nations of the 21st Century, with power devolving away from the Central state to grass roots organisations, the capitalist establishment has reacted with shock and horror, as reflected in the mainstream media's view of President Chavez.

Benny has this to say: When your presenters play the Pete Seeger concert get them to sign the petition Pete Seeger for Nobel Prize Some good news story. On Thursday I attended at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, the Peace Boat's 3rd Annual People Building Peace Concert: A Celebration of Initiatives for a Nuclear-Free World In Remembrance of Nagasaki Day. <http://upcoming.yahoo.com I hung my dove and dolphin flags above the stage and the peace sign flag bottom right hand side of stage. I put on my costume and mask and performed around the plaza in my usual way. Towards the end of the rally/concert, I danced with the flags. It was a great day. Felicity Hill and Senator Joe Valentines daughter were there. Pamela Timmins who filmed me at Indian Point, helped me set up a display on the curbside that attracted Pete Seegers attention. To my delight he responded to my request to be photographed and filmed with him. I was introduced to Phil Sauer's at the Peace Film Festival by Pam who turns out to know John Seed. Phil Sauers is a main player in the water not bombs campaign that was also inspired by Pete Seeger. This is his website: <http://www.wwrf.org/> Anyway he introduced me to the Pete Seeger appreciation page for you to check out and get inspired. <http://www.peteseeger.net > There is also a petition to nominate Pete Seeger for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize at: <http://www.petitionthem.com Please sign and post around. Wed, 15 August 2007 5.65 Mb. mono 64kbps 12:20 mins.Interview with two Australian academics who have very different views on Timor Leste's constitutional crisis. Professor Damien Kingsbury has been very critical of the role of the Fretilin party and its General Secretary Mari Alkatiri. But Bob Boughton of the University of New England spent six months there observing the Presidential elections, and he has a different view. Meanwhile, interviews with Jim Dunn (who has just been asked to return as an advisor to President Jose Ramos Horta) and East Timorese leaders, are pending. Watch this space. Did Jose Ramos Horta make a wise decision in appointing Xanana Gusmao the Prime Minister? Sat, 4 August 2007 Jose Texeira, Parliamentarian for the East Timorese Fretilin party recently issued a press release claiming Australian media bias, after an anti-Howard demonstration in Timor Leste. Australian newspaper reports described the demonstrators as a 'Fretilin mob'. Jose talks with community radio 2NimFM about a long history of anti-Fretilin bias by the Australian media, calling on his own experiences as long ago as 2005. Phone interview from Dili. Sat, 4 August 2007 3.85Mb. mono 128kbps 4:12 minsNimFM talks with Fretilin representative Paolo Malik about the constitutional standoff in East Timor's post election environment. Fretilin has received the largest vote of any party, but all the other parties have combined to ensure that is does not have a parliamentary majority. East Timor's constitution (like that of European countries, like Portugal) allows that the party with the highest number of votes can chose the Prime Minister with the endorsement of the President, but the anti-Fretilin Alliance claims that they should chose the next PM. Meanwhile President Jose Ramos Horta refuses to commit, although it is well known that he favours the Alliance candidate. NimFM then gets the views of expert East Timor observer Jim Dunn, who knows the actors in this drama. [Note:Since these interviews, the Alliance has threatened to block the budget, if PM Ramos Horta approves the appointment of the Fretilin Prime Ministerial candidate.] Comments[0]

Mon, 30 July 2007 Stuart Monkton of Greenleft Weekly talks about the aftereffects of the denial of licence renewal of RCTV; Venezuela's biggest Television media conglomerate. He explains why the Anglophone mainstream media interpretation of this as 'censorship' is disingenuous (if not downright dishonest) - and how the refusal to disallow the license renewal to the commercial channel advantages public radio by freeing up formerly privately monopolised bandwidth. Stuart also explains some of the astounding spinoff of Venezuela's socialisation program. Health programs which will put Venezuela light years ahead of the US health system, and an investment in the future with 18 new Universities. Venezuela is aiming to become less dependent on imports and using its resources to become a skill based autonomous producer of goods and technologies that will empower the Third World to use its own resources to break away from US hegemony. (14.2MB) Stereo 00:20:48 mins.(Spanish Language version - work on English language voice-over is under way). (The narration sounds good, even if you don't understand Spanish!) Sub Commandante Marcos banters with a crowd of enthralled children as he tells a political parable based around the story of a farting rock that travels the world with the help of the children of the Zapatista Autonomous School.A delightful sideline to the 6th Zapatista 'InterGalactica' Congress, with international guests and visitors from all over the world in consultation with representatives from peasant communities in the Zapatista 'Liberated Zones' in Chiapas, in southern Mexico. Community Radio Station 2NimFM has the good fortune to be in touch with Julie Webb. Julie is an independent freelance journalist who has been sending sound files including these exclusive sessions with the Zapatista leader, Sub-Commandante Marcos, to 2NimFM via the internet within hours of them taking place. This particular session is a gem. Marcos is famous in Mexico for his political fables, parables and allegories that are influenced by the decades he spent as a guerilla living clandestinely with the peasant communities of the Lacandon jungles of Chiapas, near the Guatemalan border. [Perhaps his most famous creation is Durito - . Durito (which is also Spanish for "tough little guy") is a dung beatle, versed in Hegelian philosophy, who Marcos caught stealing his tobacco one day. Durito gives Marcos lots of advice on Mexican and International politics, although Durito occasionally becomes impassioned and Quixotically rides out to be a champion for social justice on a tame tortoise called 'Pegasus'. The tales of Durito can be found at http://www.actlab.utexas.edu/~zapatistas/sim.html] Enjoy Comments[0]

In his speech El 'Sup' addresses the struggle of the Yaqui Indians, in the Northeast of Mexico. While most 'Westerners' have only heard of the Yaqui Indians through the writings of Carlos Castaneda, describing his experiences with a Yaqui Shaman ("Don Juan - a Yaqui Way of Knowledge") Marcos describes the historical struggles of the Yaqui Indians, not only spiritually, but historically - for cultural survival, and at this time, their struggle for land and even more importantly, water. Sounding confident of the outcomes he explains the differences in Fretilin's policies to those of the opposition parties, the problems that have confronted Fretilin, and the aspirations of the Timorese people. Da Silva lived as an exile in Australia because of the Indonesian invasion in the 1970s, and was once questioned by the Northern Territory Police for his role in maintaining a clandestine radio transmitter in Australia which was the main means of contact with the Fretilin forces fighting the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. Following; a review of the book from Eureka Street: "On the Timor Sea, Alkatiri was a dogged and formidable foe for the Australians and for his trouble, he earned some extraordinarily hostile treatment. Cleary says the Australian government so disliked him that when the treaty was finally ready in 2006, Australia suggested that the foreign ministers of each country sign the deal, in the presence of their prime ministers, in order to avoid having Alkatiri sign it with Howard This final agreement — the Treaty on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea — was a success for Timor, in that it was able to claw back a better share of resources. Timor’s resource share rose from 22 per cent to 60 per cent and revenue increased from 8.4 billion dollars to 24 billion dollars over the lifetime of the resources. But from the disputed BCL fields, Timor gained nothing. These are the same fields from which Australia, since 1999, had been reaping $1 million per day." The Chavez government made the decision, in accordance with laws established by a pre-Chavez government, not to renew RCTV’s concession, but instead to use the channel to establish a new public TV station, Venezuelan Social Television (TVes). Opposition forces organised protest demonstrations which were widely reported throughout the western media. No mention was made of the pro-Chavez demonstrations which brought out nearly ten times more people, applauding the government action. Comments[0]

When I get to town, my bass player's gone off to Sydney and I find myself alone in the coffee shop next door. Suddenly, a sound catches my ears... It's NIM FM 102.3 and it's really groovy! I ask the barista "Where's the local radio station, man?" He points me across the street and I'm on my way. When I walk in the door, this punker chick introduces me to this gawky, strange looking guy with two turntables and a microphone. "I've got a disc here you might want to play, man..." He replies "A disc? Dude, how about you come down to the station tomorrow and play live on the air?" What else could I do? He sat me in front of a microphone the next day, threw some heaphones on his head, and man... I thought I was sitting next to Howard Stern or something! Sheesh... It was awesome. Besides, he liked Bob Dylan and knew all about Hunter S. Thompson. The whole radio show went great (except when I fell out of my chair while trying to play Don McClean's "American Pie".) Thu, 19 April 2007 At a solidarity function in Canberra, Saturday April 10 Lisa MacDonald talks about the last Australian brigade to Venezuela. Part of the brigade's agenda was to observe the Presidential elections last December. Lisa describes the fraud-proofed voting system developed by the Venezuelans, making one wonder why it has not been adopted universally. Then she describes her experience of the now famous "Barrio 23 de Enero", a suburban neighbourhood that has become a self managing community after running the police out of town. Lisa tells of how they cope with social problems without police intervention. Mon, 12 March 2007 10 mins. 19 Mb. 256kbps East Timor - the real story Sahe da Silva is the official spokesperson for Timor Leste's governing Fretilin Party in NSW Australia. He was motivated to work with Fretilin after the misrepresentation of that party and its top officials in the Australian Press, after the riots and forced resignation of the Prime Minister in the middle of last year. Community Radio station 2NimFM caught him on the phone just before he left for East Timor, and only a few hours after the news of the trial and sentencing of Rogerio Lobato broke. Sahe deals with some of the myths and misconceptions about East Timor in the Australian media. Comments[0]
Mon, 12 March 2007 Alkatiri speaks out. March 10 2007 Mari Alkatiri, General Secretary to East Timor's governing Fretilin Party, and former Prime Minister, grants an exclusive interview to community radio station 2NimFM. Mari Alkatiri says he is pursuing legal action against the Australian ABC Four Corners program for the defamatory story that he was 'arming death squads', and which led to pressures which forced his resignation as Prime minister last year. He will also be providing evidence of two attempted coups against him, and foreign involvement in these attempts. He talks about his confidence in the Fretilin party's ability to win the upcoming elections, his willingness to stand for Prime Minister, if requested, and the success of his administration in securing the best possible outcome for East Timor to exploit its oil resources, and how the East Timorese economy is about to take off. (Unfortunately there were some problems with setting the correct sound levels for recording an international phone call, so the sound quality leaves something to be desired. The interview can be heard well enough to be transcribed, however). Comments[0]

Wed, 13 December 2006 13 Mb. 18 Minutes 28 seconds 96 kbps stereoDepending on how one defines a coup, Fiji last Tuesday had its fifth or sixth coup (depending on what you call a coup), this time led by Fiji's military commander,Commodore Frank Bainimarama. But in Fiji, things are never quite what they seem. Specialist in Pacific media and journalism and their contexts, Dr Mark Hayes, is a very close observer of the Pacific Region and Fiji, as well as a frequent traveller Out There. Back in late April, 2006, Mark predicted the outcome of the 2006 Fiji election, a return of the government led by now ousted Prime Minister, Laisenea Qarase who was himself installed as Interim Prime Minister by Commodore Bainimarama in the middle of 2000. Dr Hayes does a weekly Pacific News Wrap - 'Mo oe mai i le Pasifika (For you, from the Pacific)' - on Mondays for the subscriber-only alert and digest service, The Daily Briefing. Last week, he did daily UpDates on the developing Fiji crisis, drawing on his extensive sources and contacts. Dr Hayes never goes to the resorts in Fiji. He plunges into Suva and surrounds, talks with and, more importantly, listens to, his array of well placed and astute local observers, and with a lot of historical, anthropological, political, and sociological reading, stirs the mix, and tries to make accurate sense of it all. Locals braved the drizzle to see this loyal local perform for her people . Diana has made her mark in California and other parts of the USA, but isn't too proud to do a number of benefits for the local community. This homecoming Queen doesn't have a gun, but she has a enough attitude to take care of a dozen country towns like Nimbin. She wields emotional honesty with a talent for strong lyric. A raw, unplugged live performance with several of her signature tunes, that make her a favorite to a new generation. Comments[0]
