Rob Wesley-Smith has just come back from one of his many visits to Timor Leste. He is familiar with the area (Same) and the people where Australian troops tried to capture the rebel mutineer, Alfredo Reynado. Wes knows Reynado personally, being one of the few people to meet him when Reynado first came to Australia as a refugee. While not impressed with Reynado's role in recent events, Wes is very critical of the 'modus operandi' of the Australian Defense Forces in Timor Leste.

Wes has been active in defense of the independence of the East Timorese people since the first days of the Indonesian intervention. His involvement goes back to dodging police and ASIO agents to set up and maintain the clandestine radio transmitter, which was the only means the Fretilin/Falintil guerillas had of communicating with the outside world, after Indonesia sealed East Timor off.  Wes was also involved in several attempts to smuggle medical supplies to the Fretilin guerillas in 1976. In this interview he recalls half a lifetime of activism for Timor Leste.

Julie Webb has just returned after 9 months in Mexico where she worked as a correspondent for Narco-News, and a human rights observer on remote Zapatista communities. In that time she saw sub-commandante Marcos in action, met other Zapatista leaders, and was active in fending off violent attempts by landowners to  force Zapatista communities off their land and out of their homes. This was done using Zapatista tactics of non-violence. She observed the Zapatista movement supporting the 'other government'  - an alternative movement aiming for a government in Mexico based on grass roots democracy and indigenous traditions  - which is establishing itself all over Mexico. In the state of Oaxaca the 'Other Government' now ignores the State governor and runs much of the state from grass-roots community organisations. there.
Pamela Timmins who filmed me at Indian Point, helped me set up a display on
the curbside that attracted Pete Seegers attention. To my delight he
responded to my request to be photographed and filmed with him. I was
introduced to Phil Sauer's at the Peace Film Festival by Pam who turns out
to know John Seed. Phil Sauers is a main player in the water not bombs

Jose Texeira, Parliamentarian for the East Timorese Fretilin party recently issued a press release claiming Australian media bias, after an anti-Howard demonstration in Timor Leste. Australian newspaper reports described the demonstrators as a 'Fretilin mob'.  Jose talks with community radio 2NimFM about a long history of anti-Fretilin bias by the Australian media, calling on his own experiences as long ago as 2005.

Fretilin has received the largest vote of any party, but all the other parties have combined to ensure that is does not have a parliamentary majority. Sub Commandante Marcos banters with a crowd of enthralled children as he tells a political parable based around the story of a farting rock that travels the world with the help of the children of the Zapatista Autonomous School.A delightful sideline to the 6th Zapatista 'InterGalactica' Congress, with international guests and visitors from all over the world in consultation with representatives from peasant communities in the Zapatista 'Liberated Zones' in Chiapas, in southern Mexico.
Community Radio Station 2NimFM has the good fortune to be in touch with Julie Webb. Julie is an independent freelance journalist who has been sending sound files including these exclusive sessions with the Zapatista leader, Sub-Commandante Marcos, to 2NimFM via the internet within hours of them taking place.
This particular session is a gem. Marcos is famous in Mexico for his political fables, parables and allegories that are influenced by the decades he spent as a guerilla living clandestinely with the peasant communities of the Lacandon jungles of Chiapas, near the Guatemalan border.
 

[Perhaps his most famous creation is Durito  - . Durito (which is also Spanish for "tough little guy") is a dung beatle, versed in Hegelian philosophy, who Marcos caught stealing his tobacco one day. In his speech El 'Sup' addresses the struggle of the Yaqui Indians, in the Northeast of Mexico. Saturday June 23, a week before the parliamentary elections in Timor Leste, the Prime Minister of Timor Leste, Estanislau Da Silva, pauses in his election campaign in Bacau to speak with Marie Cameron of Nimbin Community Radio 2NimFM. Sounding confident of the outcomes he explains the differences in Fretilin's policies to those of the opposition parties, the problems that have confronted Fretilin, and the aspirations of the Timorese people. Da Silva lived as an exile in Australia because of the Indonesian invasion in the 1970s, and was once questioned by the Northern Territory Police for his role in maintaining a clandestine radio transmitter in Australia which was the main means of contact with the Fretilin forces fighting the Indonesian occupation of East Timor.

Cleary says the Australian government so disliked him that when the treaty was finally ready in 2006, Australia suggested that the foreign ministers of each country sign the deal, in the presence of their prime ministers, in order to avoid having Alkatiri sign it with Howard

This final agreement — the Treaty on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea — was a success for Timor, in that it was able to claw back a better share of resources. Timor’s resource share rose from 22 per cent to 60 per cent and revenue increased from 8.4 billion dollars to 24 billion dollars over the lifetime of the resources.

But from the disputed BCL fields, Timor gained nothing. These are the same fields from which Australia, since 1999, had been reaping $1 million per day."

On May 27, the 20-year concession to broadcast over the state-owned Channel 2 airwave, which had been granted to multi-millionaire Marcel Granier’s RCTV, expired. The Chavez government made the decision, in accordance with laws established by a pre-Chavez government, not to renew RCTV’s concession, but instead to use the channel to establish a new public TV station, Venezuelan Social Television (TVes). Opposition forces organised protest demonstrations which were widely reported throughout the western media. No mention was  made of the pro-Chavez demonstrations which brought out nearly ten times more people, applauding the government action.

 "No man, I heard there was a radio round here somewhere, thought I'd check it out ... "  What else could I do? I sat him in front of a microphone, strapped him in and hung a harp round his neck. Aha! Got me a real live punk rocker here, from Oregon; Purple-heartland of grunge. The only X generationist to do a passable Dylan imitation, and who knows who Hunter S. Thomson was. And then I nearly fell off my chair when he did strange and unusual things to Don McClean's "American Pie" ...

I drove out to Nimbin on a tip that I'd find good musicians to jam with and some good "herbal inspiration" if you know what I mean. When I get to town, my bass player's gone off to Sydney and I find myself alone in the coffee shop next door. Suddenly, a sound catches my ears... It's NIM FM 102.3 and it's really groovy! I ask the barista "Where's the local radio station, man?" He points me across the street and I'm on my way. When I walk in the door, this punker chick introduces me to this gawky, strange looking guy with two turntables and a microphone. "I've got a disc here you might want to play, man..." He replies "A disc? Dude, how about you come down to the station tomorrow and play live on the air?" What else could I do? He sat me in front of a microphone the next day, threw some heaphones on his head, and man... I thought I was sitting next to Howard Stern or something! Sheesh... It was awesome. Besides, he liked Bob Dylan and knew all about Hunter S. Thompson. The whole radio show went great (except when I fell out of my chair while trying to play Don McClean's "American Pie".)

At a solidarity function in Canberra, Saturday April 10 Lisa MacDonald talks about the last Australian brigade to Venezuela. Part of the brigade's agenda was to observe the Presidential elections last December.  Lisa describes the fraud-proofed voting system developed by the Venezuelans, making one wonder why it has not been adopted universally. Then she describes her experience of the now famous "Barrio 23 de Enero", a suburban neighbourhood that has become a self managing community after running the police out  of town. Lisa tells of how they cope with social problems without police intervention.

Public meetings held on Easter Sunday in the local neighbourhood center, nobody knows about, by shadowy un-accountable un-elected people deciding for the whole community what is best for us - Does the police run our businesses now? Lots of questions yet to be answered -
The colorful street trade is THE main attraction of the village. If that element gets removed, Nimbin indeed will lose its main income, tourists spending considerable dollars while in Nimbin. Legal foods, drinks, accomodation, bakery, general store buys, hotel, entertainment, the list is long enough to claim that almost every business needs the tourist dollar to stay open.
We are puzzled.

East Timor  - the real story
Sahe da Silva is the official spokesperson for Timor Leste's governing Fretilin Party in NSW Australia. He was motivated to work with Fretilin after the misrepresentation of that party and its top officials in the Australian Press, after the riots and forced resignation of the Prime Minister in the middle of last year.  Community Radio station 2NimFM caught him on the phone just before he left for East Timor, and only a few hours after the news of the trial and sentencing of Rogerio Lobato broke. Sahe deals with some of the myths and misconceptions about East Timor in the Australian media.

Mari Alkatiri, General Secretary to East Timor's governing Fretilin Party, and former Prime Minister, grants an exclusive interview to community radio station 2NimFM. Mari Alkatiri says he is pursuing legal action against the Australian ABC Four Corners program for the defamatory story that he was 'arming death squads', and which led to pressures which forced his resignation as Prime minister last year. He will also be providing evidence of two attempted coups against him, and foreign involvement in these attempts. He talks about his confidence in the Fretilin party's ability to win the upcoming elections, his willingness to stand for Prime Minister, if requested, and the success of his administration in securing the best possible outcome for East Timor to exploit its oil resources, and how the East Timorese economy is about to take off.

(Unfortunately there were some problems with setting the correct sound levels for recording an international phone call, so the sound quality leaves something to be desired. The interview can be heard well enough to be transcribed, however).

Finalists of the Nimbin Poetry World Cup; performance poetry and selection of the winner. For the last 10 years Nimbin has awarded the Cup to the performance poet who, in the eyes of the judges and the people performs great poetry. This year, a woman was judged as the finest of the five finalists by a panel including the winner of last year's Cup. Challenging, amusing, witty, dramatic  ... it's all there. Diana has made her mark in California and other parts of the USA, but isn't too proud to do a number of benefits for the local community.
